When budgeting for a shipping container, buyers often focus entirely on the purchase price of the box itself. However, delivery is a separate item rarely included in the initial quote and can add £200 to £900+ (plus VAT) to your final bill when using a HIAB lorry.

Understanding how HIAB delivery rates are calculate, and how your site setup dictates the size of lorry required, will help you budget accurately and avoid costly surcharges on delivery day.

1. Rigid HIAB Lorry

  • Vehicle Layout: A single rigid chassis with the crane mounted behind the cab or at the rear.
  • Best For: 10ft and 20ft containers, residential driveways, narrow country lanes, and sites with limited turning space.

2. Articulated HIAB (Artic)

  • Vehicle Layout: A tractor unit pulling a long flatbed trailer equipped with a heavy-duty hydraulic crane.
  • Best For: 40ft containers, 40ft High Cubes, or dropping two 20ft containers in a single trip.
  • Dimensions: Measures up to 16.5 metres (55 feet) in length and needs substantial clearance for sweeping turns.

Key Factors That Drive Up HIAB Costs

  1. Crane Reach & Lift Distance: Standard HIAB cranes drop containers directly parallel to the lorry (within 2 to 4 metres). If you need the crane to reach over a fence, low wall, or hedge (6 to 10+ metres away), you will need a long-reach or heavy-capacity HIAB, which commands a higher hire rate.
  2. Container Size & Weight: A standard 20ft container weighs around 2.2 tonnes empty, whereas a 40ft High Cube weighs close to 4 tonnes. Larger units require heavier HIAB cranes with greater lifting capacity.
  3. Outrigger Footprint: HIAB lorries extend hydraulic outrigger legs (stabilisers) on both sides before lifting. If your site lacks space to fully extend these legs, the driver cannot legally or safely unload.
  4. Depot Proximity: Pricing depends heavily on your distance from major UK container hubs (such as Felixstowe, London Gateway, Southampton, Liverpool, or regional inland container parks).

Hidden Fees & Surcharges to Avoid

Watch Out for Aborted Delivery Fees

If the HIAB driver arrives and cannot safely deploy their stabilisers, or if overhead obstructions prevent the crane arm from extending, the delivery will be aborted. You will still be charged the full haulage fee plus an aborted delivery / redelivery charge (typically £250–£500 + VAT).

  • Demurrage (Driver Waiting Time): Most quotes include 1 to 2 hours on site for offloading. Additional delay time (e.g., waiting for gates to be opened or ground to be cleared) is billed at £50 to £85 + VAT per hour.
  • Overhead Cable Hazards: Statutory safety regulations prohibit operating a HIAB crane within specific distances of overhead power lines. If unannounced power lines block the lift, the driver will decline the drop.

How to Prepare Your Site for a HIAB Drop

  • Check Overhead Clearance: Ensure a minimum height clearance of 4.5 metres (15 feet) for transit, and at least 6 to 8 metres of clear vertical space at the offload spot for the crane boom to extend.
  • Provide Firm Ground for Stabilisers: Stabiliser legs exert immense point pressure. Ground must be solid concrete, tarmac, or heavily compacted hardcore—not soft grass, soil, or block paving prone to sinking.
  • Mark Out the Corner Points: Lay down railway sleepers or thick concrete paving slabs where the four corners of the container will sit. This ensures the unit remains level so the double doors open and latch cleanly.
