Goole and the shipping industry
For companies transporting containers from the port of Goole, there is less fuel consumption and quicker destination arrivals, also giving rise to more efficiency from their workforce.
The port of Goole sits inland on the River Ouse, and sits almost on the UK motorway network. The M62 is only 3 miles away from the port, with the junction to the A1(M) less than 20 miles driving distance. Containers leaving Goole in transit, travelling west along the M62 will soon find themselves in Leeds (35 miles). This motorway cuts right through the country taking container cargo onto Manchester (72 miles), and onto Liverpool (100 miles) on the west coast. Containers’ being transported south is also straightforward. Travelling the M62 route and prior to reaching Leeds, cargo can be taken via the M18 motorway, which after a short time will join with the A1(M) at Doncaster (21 miles). Moving south from Doncaster the M18 soon meets the M1 and from here it is plain sailing southbound. The M1 passes Nottingham (65 miles), Leicester (92 miles), Northampton (129 miles), Luton (156 miles), and on into London (189 miles). Due to the inland location of the port, all of these destinations are made easier to reach for containers being transported, than if they were shipped to a coastal port. Containers in transit heading north, taking the A19 arterial road will soon find themselves in York (23 miles), or travelling via the A1(M) containers can be transported to Newcastle (118 miles), and beyond to Scotland.
A wide range of facilities are available at the port of Goole for handling bulk and general cargo, and the port has a particular strength in shipping containers. With significant investment being made by the port authority, demand for the facilities continues to increase. With this investment and future development plans, the port of Goole should continue to thrive and continue to be the premier inland port of the UK for handling shipping containers.
