Hull

The port of Hull is located on the North bank of the river Humber, towards the east coast of England. It is a major world trader, importing and exporting with ports in Europe and all over the globe. In 2010 the port of Hull handled 9.2 million tonnes of cargo traffic.

The ports location also makes the ideal destination for inland transportation of cargo, being only 17 miles from the M62 motorway. Once travelling on the M62 containers in transit will find the major destinations of Leeds (60 miles), Bradford (68 miles) and Manchester (98 miles). From Leeds, cargo can also be routed onto the M1 motorway, where travelling south, containers can be delivered to Sheffield (65 miles), Nottingham (91 miles), Leicester (118 miles), Milton Keynes (167 miles), and London (214 miles). Joining the same M1 motorway and transporting North would take cargo over the border of Scotland, and ultimately to Edinburgh (263 miles).

The site of a port and trading from thus port can be traced back to the 13th century. During the 13th and 14th centuries the port of Hull was a major English exporter of wool. A major import into the port during this time was Wine. In the 15th century with wool exports declining, the trade in cloth from England was growing and this is where the port of Hull turned its attention, becoming a major exporting port within this industry. A hundred years later, cloth exports were on the decrease and Hull then turned its attentions to lead. By the 17th century the port of Hull was known as England’s third port behind London and Bristol. The port was thriving with the export of lead and cloth, and the importation of hemp, iron and tar. The cargo in which Hull now trades is slightly different to the past, but is still as diverse. Liquid bulk, dry bulk, metals, RO-RO traffic, agricultural materials, shipping containers, and much more keep the port of Hull at the forefront of the UK shipping industry. The port is ideally located for import and export across the North Sea, as well as its proximity to the UK motorway network, along with year on year investment, Hull should continue to be a major port.
