Felixstowe
Felixstowe, located in Suffolk on the east coast of England, and only 3 miles from the port of Harwich, is the largest container port in the UK. The port deals with 35% of the countries container cargo, making it also one of the busiest in Europe and ranked 38th in the world in 2009.
The shipping services from Felixstowe connect the UK with 360 ports across the globe, in no less than 100 countries. For transportation within the UK, Felixstowe is serviced by two major A roads. The A12 travelling through Essex to London, and the A14 cutting through the middle of the country to the midlands.
Major destinations serviced by these arterial roads with distances from Felixstowe are Ipswich (12 miles), Newmarket (57 miles), Cambridge (68 miles) and Kettering (112 miles). Containers being transported via the A14 would then join the motorway network onto Birmingham and beyond.
Transportation via the other major arterial road from Felixstowe, the A12, would take you through Colchester (28 miles), Chelmsford (58 miles) and the capital, London (87 miles).
Felixstowe is a completely international port, shipping containers all over the world, as far afield as Africa, Asia and Australia.
Felixstowe has two main terminals as well as a roll-on roll-off terminal for wheeled containers. Being the busiest container port in the UK, Felixstowe will on average see over 2 million shipping containers pass through the port. This equates to double the amount of any other UK port.
The Port of Felixstowe, as we know it now, was founded in 1875 with the Dock opening in 1886. From 1913 the Port served as a marine aircraft research station, developing over 250 military and civilian seaplanes, one of which The Felixstowe Fury was the largest in the world with a wingspan of 123 feet. This aircraft research continued for some 15 years and some of the original hangars still remain. In WWI the Port served as a Royal Navy destroyer base and flying boat station. In WWII it was a base for motor torpedo boats and air-sea rescue. Containers came on-stream in the early 1960s and in 1966 work commenced on the container terminal at Landguard. The Port was taken over by European Ferries Ltd in 1976; in 1987 by P & O and in 1991 by Hutchison Whanpoa Group Hong Kong. Hutchison are still the owners at present.
The port also has its own police force, along with fire and ambulance services dedicated to the port alone. These services are essential for a container port the size of Felixstowe.
