Bristol

The port of Bristol, situated at Avonmouth is a top international port. In 2010 the port handled 7.2 million tonnes of cargo traffic, making it one of the leading ports in the UK. With regular freight services to South Africa, the Far East and other major worldwide destinations, Bristol has become a real hub for import and export.

The location of Bristol makes the port the most centrally located deep-sea port in the UK. This is good news for all involved in the container transport business, as it brings incoming cargo closer to the centre of the country. This can mean big savings on transit costs, and also fewer emissions from transportation, as the inland distribution of cargo is reduced. Bristol also has a big advantage over other major UK ports for container transportation, as it is the only port with motorway connections in all directions. North, South, East and West.

Container transit from Bristol port enters straight into the motorway network. Leaving the port you find yourself immediately on the M5 motorway. This motorway goes north through the West of the country, with the first major destination being Cheltenham (42 miles). This then leads on straight into the heart of Birmingham (86 miles). Travelling south on the M5 will take cargo into Devon and ultimately to Exeter (75 miles). Alternatively, on leaving the port transit can be sought via the M49. This motorway links with the M4 at the Severn crossing. From here cargo is only a short distance from the major cities and towns of Wales. Cardiff (35 miles) being the first major destination, the M4 travels right around the Welsh coast, taking in Port Talbot (64 miles) and Swansea (72 miles). Transporting containers westbound into England on the M4 takes you past Swindon (44 miles), and onto Reading (83 miles). The M4 motorway also takes you direct to London Heathrow airport (108 miles).

The port of Bristol has many advantages over its competitors, particularly in the South of England. It can handle much larger ships than many, anything up to 130,000 tonnes. Due to the ports location it is recognised as the most economical port for inland distribution, with the Midlands, London and Wales all within easy reach. Bristol also boasts the best motorway access of all the UK ports.
